Review: The film Youth in Revolt has a unique character about it. It is a teen movie all right. But it isn’ t the standard geek meets girl variety- not by a long shot. The film offers a great onscreen twist. Youth in Revolt focuses on the unconventional streaks found in teenage rebels. Rather than emphasizing drug abuse and wanton behavior, being out from under parental scrutiny and other restrictions, Youth emphasizes adult characters restricted by awkward teenage physiologies. We are treated to scenarios in which teens demonstrate the sophistications of their urges, preferences, and the dept of their desires. Make no mistake, Youth deal with the awkward drive to lose virginity. But all of it is carried off with a type of wise maturity in characters Nick (Cera) and Sheen (Doubleday) plus the other minor characters too. Cera pulls off a dual role of Nick Twisps and an alter ego for Twisps, the dark Francois Dillinger. Nick is a loser per se, but likeable. Nick narrates the film and it inspires genuine laughter. Dillinger is the anti-Nick. Yet, I could not help but think Dillinger is the anti-Cera too, because Cera is so at home as Nick. It is this dual persona that keeps the movie fresh and moving along. The film works well as long as it stays focused on Nick and Sheeni as the main love item. The supporting cast is not well-developed so their interplay with the main characters is more fill than substance. Mary Kay Place and Steve Buscemi play Sheeni’s parents, living in the upstate Califorinia nowhere of Clear Lake. Nick is from the Bay Area near San Francisco and is on the lam from a group of rowdy sailors to whom he owes a pile of money. His forced migration out of the Bay Area is the reason he meets Sheeni in the first place. It works strangely enough. I give the film a 6 out of 10.
