Review: Jackie Chan plays lead in this spy spoof comedy as “Bob Ho.” It isn’t one of Jackie’s better efforts; but, then again Chan is into quantity- always has and he always will be. His spy partner, Colton James, is played by the lackluster trailer dweller, Billy Ray Cyrus. Believe me, his character name is cooler than the character Cyrus portrays. Super spy Bob and his partner end up playing double cross with Russia spies who want to mindlessly destroy the world’s supply of oil, except for what lies beneath Russia. Duh. The film unravels as Ho’s friends’ kids unwittingly download a secret document that the Russians need to make their plan work. The film is a mathematical equation of the lowest order as Ho tries to save the kids and the world. There are plenty of heartwarming Chan moments as he works tirelessly to save the kids and the world. Did I say “save the kids and the world” already? You get the idea- this film is redundant and poorly executed. I am not alone in my low opinion of The Spy Next Door. One major poll generated a 14 per cent favorability rating. However, oddly enough, Chan lovers have been enough of a fan base to make it a modest commercial success. When all else fails, make some money. It makes you wonder though, what was the motivation to make this film? In all fairness, stunts in the film are passable. Chan demands quality in that respect. And he does most of his own still. He is no spring chicken. American leading male actors, and Angelina “Laura Croft” Jolie, should take note. It was how Chan got his start as an action hero- stunts! Even though his support cast member Cyrus can’t act his way out of the bathroom, it was heaps of fun to imagine Miley showing up in the middle of a scene and chew him out for ruining her reputation as a creative star talent. A guy can dream can’t he?
I believed The Spy Next Door was terrible.
