Review: What was widely known back in the day when Hitler and Mussolini were having their ways in the world, as fiery orators and seething dictators in Germany and Italy, was that King George VI of England had a rather noticeable speech disorder. It seemed that the King's stuttering cadence, which hadn't been much of a problem before he took the throne, was a dramatic concern for the free world after his brother suddenly was forced to abdicate. There was poor King George, awash in Nazi and Fasciste propaganda speeches, during the pre-war era. The story goes on about how a speech therapist of Australian persuasion, one Lionel Logue, helps the King overcome his disadvantageous impediment to carry his nation into the greatest conflagration the world has ever experienced. Screen writer David Seidler masterfully captures the profound tale of two men whose destinies cross during one of history's most trying eras. The details of an almost brotherly bond emerge from the special challenges faced by a King without a voice. Leave it to the British to take such a tragic backdrop and a melancholy affliction of glaring notice that one wouldn't wish on one's worst enemy and weave a humorous meme which left most of us forgetting how bleak the story truly was when it began. Direction by Tom Hooper is first-rate as the movie climaxes to perfection setting up the audience to applaud wildly at the end. Geoffrey Rush is Lionel Logue and steals the show. Hardly outdone in his role of King George VI is the venerable Colin Firth. It's been said that life's trials provide us the mettle for true inspiration and this holds true for Mr. Seidler writing such a driving, emotive story about the stuttering King. Seidler endured a similar affliction as a child which had such an impact on him that he wanted, at the beginning of his career, to write his screenplay. Seidler petitioned the Queen Mother, King George VI's daughter Elizabeth II, who reluctantly agreed with a serious caveat- "not in my lifetime." Seidler patiently waited out her 101 year lifetime the final 39 years. The production of this startling movie was charmed by the addition of authentic source material into the script from Lionel Logue's personal diaries. As luck would have it, near the shoot's end, the Logue's grandson was located living a mere 10 minutes from the film's director. If you see one major motion picture this year, make it "The King's Speech."
