Review: Despite all of the criticisms against him for his drunken tirades and personal life failings, Mel Gibson is a first rate dramatic actor. And his role as detective Thomas Craven suits his range and talents for a compelling emotional performance. This long-time family man plays the law enforcement career pro who is also the father of a beautiful young daughter, Emma, who is out to change the world by exposing corporate corruption, played ably by Bojana Novakovic. The natural experience of fathering his own children in real life plays on every parent’s worst fears- the death of their child before themselves, and the brutal murder of an offspring. Gibson digs deep and lays it on very thick and professionally so, as we have come to expect. The intrigue and suspense around his daughter’s brutal shotgun murder leads Gibson on a twisted hunt for her killers. As he did so well in his escapades with Danny Glover in the Lethal Weapon series ,Gibson endures poisonings, gunshot wounds and other vicious punishments at the hands of the bad guys in order to serve justice one-on-one. Especially great is the big scene where Gibson pours radioactive milk down the throat of the bad guy and then shoots him in the throat after he himself has been mortally wounded by the assailant. The suspense and the action are paralleled by a touching supernatural parallel in the storyline adapted from a 1985 tele-series on BBC, Edge of Darkness. Craven communicates by memories of his daughter from when she was young to help himself think through the details and the unknowns of the case. This definitely advantages him in a swirling mystery of what his daughter was working on before she was killed. You will not want to leave your seat during this heated action suspense thriller. You will, however, be on the edge of it all throughout the last 20 minutes. I give it 10 out of 10. YAY Mel!
