Review: Channing Tatum does a terrific job in his role as John in a sleeper of a box office success. This film knocked Avatar out of first place after a 12 week run. The high grossing film is a sleeper of a film that has enticing potential from the very opening scene- the battlefield. John has been shot several times and is in a dream state where he is being showered by coins. Coins play a symbol role in John’s life- of the emotional neglect he suffers from his father, a coin collecting enthusiast, and the release of his sorrows over losing the love of his life while off serving his country during war time. The cliché of dear John could be played out easily despite the best intentions of an able screenwriter. Yet this film manages to avoid the trap. I was rooting for John to win in the end, especially when his one true love, the beautiful Savannah, abandons him via letter while John is deployed overseas. That Savannah falls for an autistic man, seems to soften John’s grit in an otherwise thoroughly disappointing situation for the combat veteran. He takes heart and realizes how much he feels for Savannah despite letting her go. The novel on which this film is based doesn’t requite their love in its ending. The film rewards us in a clever way that I won’t divulge. And it is how the film avoids cliché. There is another inspiring twist to the film. The obvious patriotism of a fighting American soldier is apparent throughout the film. And the film presents this characteristic without jading cynicisms about war, although the toll on John’s mind and body are obvious. He is a combat soldier. When the 9/11 attacks occur, John re-enlists, the attacks setting his inner conflict over whether to stay in or get out. Dear John is a film about the best in the modern American character. It follows the journeys of the heart amidst the war and death confronted everyday by fighting Americans.
