Review: This British film attempts to bring Randal Keynes’ biographical portrayal of Charles Darwin, famed creator of the theory of evolution, Annie’s Box. Jeremy Thomas courageously produced the film, written by John Collee and directed seamlessly by Jon Amiel. Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connelly star as Charles and Emma. Few biographies could ever be brought to the screen 100 per cent faithful to original texts. Creation is a tastefully fictionalized rendition of Keynes’ work, presenting viewers with a candid representation of Darwin’s relationship with his daughter, Annie, as played by Martha West. The setting for the film is the segment of Darwin’s life when he was embroiled in the writing of his magnum opus, On the Origin of the Species. Creation richly portrays the agony of the scientist as he breaches the hold of religious beliefs about the natural world, and the human experience within it. England at the time, like much of the Western world was just beginning to awaken to the possibilities of science in explaining with great accuracy the phenomena of nature, some four centuries after Galileo spoke truth the Rome about the movements of the Earth around the Sun. Darwin was beset by religious tensions in his life. First, his wife is angst-filled over her husband’s belief that God did not in fact create the world and everything in it. Second his young daughter dies at the age of 10 seemingly to make belief in divine intervention or prayer appear as utter folly. And then there are colleagues who condemn Darwin for “killing God” because of his quest for scientific knowledge. Although many people know or have heard of Darwin, few know the story of the price he paid and the labor he gave freely to the world to have the theory of evolution see the light of day. Creation does a splendid job of faithfully portraying the sensitive yet driven soul who persevered against his would-be judges in the name of God. Creation is a quality film that will become a classically instructive piece of media in classrooms the world over.
