Review: It's hard to improve on a classic fairy tale story. Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland is possibly one of the best of all time in this regard. Then again, Tim Burton's visual mastery of CGI and special effects manages to adapt rather well to Carroll's brilliant tale. No one back in the day would have illustrated Wonderland quite like Burton's minions have drawn out the backgrounds and details of Alice's haunt. And that is what makes the film version remake of the Disney cartoon classic all that more compelling. The starts and stops of the tale are enough coming at you from the book. Burton, however, turns them into a contact sport. The screams and rants of the Red Queen, the quiet seductions of the Cheshire Cat, and the madcap antics of Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, all punctuate the film leaving you rather manic at times as you settle back into your seat from the latest verbal tsunami. The only predictable element of the film apart from the story line is Tim Burton. If you are familiar with Tim’s approach you will understand everything your eye has the time and good fortune to take in- and then some. If not, if you missed his other films then you may be in for a real surprise. There isn't a dull moment even though I knew what was coming. Not one detail was left to cliché. Makeup seemed to focus on the eyes and build out character quirks from there. Contrasting Burton's characters with Disney's animated version, the former takes the cake with its rich velvet hues and sometimes bizarre character twists. Of course, there is nothing normal in Wonderland. The texture of this film is made for high-def media players. It is one to own just to sit back and use as eye candy. I don't know if the story line will get the rave reviews; but, then again, it is hard to rave about a timelessly told perfect fairy tale.
